M401 is an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant with a typical particle size of 2-5 micromenter. It is milky suspension, which upon storage may separate into a bottom layer of white precipitates and clear liquid in the top. A homogenous suspension can be obtained again by gentle shaking. The M401 adjuvant has a poorly crystalline boehmite structure when examined by X-ray diffraction. Each milligram M401 adsorbs 2-4 milligrams of bovine serum albumin, a capacity that is higher than that of the crystalline aluminum hydroxide in the market place. The point of zero charge is typically at pH9.0-9.5, but can be modified to meet curstomers’ need. M401 adsorbs proteins with isoelectric points <7.0. It is especially suitable for inactivated bacterial vaccines and recombinant protein vaccines.

M 401 is supplied at 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2% concentration.
